Dorota KawaBarbara Bohle has studied "Food- and Biotechnology" at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna after working as a Medical Technical Assistant in the team of Prof. Dietrich Kraft at the Institute of Experimental Pathology, University of Vienna, Austria, for 5 years. In 2000 she received her PhD and in 2002 the Venia docendi in Immunology. Since then she leads the research group “Allergy Research” at the Department of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research at the Medical University of Vienna. In 2010 she was appointed a full professor for Cellular Allergology. Since 2011 she is the Head of the Institute of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research and the Division of Experimental Allergology. From 2007-2015 she led the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Immunomodulation.

The main focus of her scientific work is the characterization of the role of allergen-specific T lymphocytes and various types of antigen-processing cells in the pathophysiology of allergy. She is also highly interested in the elucidation of the mechanisms of secondary food allergy. Her work has markedly contributed to the understanding of the pathophysiology of pollen-related food allergy and was awarded with prestigious national and international awards. Her goals are to better understand the mechanisms of allergic diseases and their cure, as well as to introduce new diagnostic and therapeutic concepts for allergy into clinical use.

Barbara Bohle has extended experience in academic teaching and congress organization. She has was involved in the organisation of the Annual Congress of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) in 2006 and 2016, the European Congress of Immunology (ECI) in 2015 and the International Congress of Immunology 2025, held in Vienna. She served as board member for several national and international scientific organizations and societies. Furthermore, she was the Editor-in-Chief for International Archives of Allergy and Immunology from 2013-2017.

Barbara Bohle is the author of >220 peer-reviewed scientific papers, most of them published in highly ranked journals in the field of allergy and immunology. She has mentored 12 Master and 15 PhD students.
